Happy Halloween from Alientrap Games! Here’s an early look at #Wytchwood, our new game about magic, and fairy tales!https://t.co/kJhBGZoci1 pic.twitter.com/b7aRyCPUZ3 — Jesse McGibney (@JesseMcGibs) October 31, 2017
Gunhead is based on a prototype I made in 2016 midway through Cryptark’s development. I thought the overall strategy aspects of Cryptark (how it randomly generates scenarios and challenges) would be perfect for a FPS game. The original prototype had more parkour style movement as a central mechanic – very Titanfall inspired with wallrunning / hopping needed to get around – which I ended up entirely replacing with a jetpack after I saw the first players try it and fail horribly. We had the prototype sitting around for a while, then once Harley (3d artist for Autocraft/MaximumOverride) had some free time he started experimenting with creating 3d models/environments out of Jesse’s (Cryptark artist) original concepts. Development on Gunhead happened very quickly because it was like we had already done preproduction for years with Cryptark’s development.
The idea for Cryptark originally was based on a game project called Zymotic I started after Nexuiz (and worked on for about 3 years before we started Capsized), about a FPS player fighting against a RTS style enemy (where the enemy has resources / factories / and attack strategies). So Gunhead is somewhat like finally getting back to Zymotic 12 years later
Wytchwood is the first Alientrap project where I am not the lead programmer or even a designer, just helping with production and some advice. I really hope this continues with more Alientrap projects since I think my involvement as a co-designer can actually limit the type of games we make. I’ve realized I have a pretty limited subset of game types I really enjoy compared to most gamers – basically forcing our games to be more action/physics driven then they needed to be (especially with Apotheon). So for Alientrap to expand beyond my limited scope of games I think I need to step back as a co-designer and take just a producer role
With Modbox I am hoping to get the experience working as a AR game building application. First step was hooking up a Zed Camera for mixed reality capture
